Frogman Tim Cotterill

Posted on: September 13, 2011

Artist Tim Cotterill, now best known internationally as The Frogman, was born in Leicester, England in 1950.

After an early career as an apprentice engineer in the UK, Tim Cotterill worked extensively with metal, first on outlandish motorcycles and also sculpting unique birds.  Now based in Venice, California, The Frogman has forged a career (and an army of international art collectors) from producing his fabulous limited edition bronze frog sculptures.

Tim Cotterill's bronze frog sculptures capture the whimsical character, the jewel-like quality and the pure joy of these beautiful little creatures. Many contain physical attributes in line with humans such as long femine legs and characterful faces.  All facets that make the frog sculptures so endearing and interesting to the viewer.

The bronze frog collection are often mistaken for glass or hand painted bronze due to their strikingly unique finishes.  They are in fact all molten bronze and the colours produced using chemicals creating vivid and bespoke patina finishes.

The Frogman starts by shaping the basis of the sculpture with a wire frame and builds up the shape using car compound and sanding and sculpting the frog sculpture.  The finished bronze frog is then produced using the ancient lost wax process which involves creating a wax duplicate of the original frog which is then encased in a ceramic slurry which is later heated to displace the wax and is then filled with bronze.  The ceramic shell is then removed leaving the raw frog which is then ready for polishing and finishing with it's unique coloured patina.  This time consuming and labour intensive process is repeated for each of the limited edition frogs which are all individually signed and numbered.

Although Frogman's most well known and popular subject matter is Frogs, his garden oasis at his home in California has inspired other subjects including Koi fish and Gekko's.  Birds have also been studied and sculpted by Tim Cotterill with both Kingfishers and Robins being cast in bronze in recent years.

These stunning sculptures can now be found around the world in galleries and private collections and have to be seen to be believed.
